Your gums help to support your teeth and keep them in place, so keeping them clean and healthy is essential for your future dental health and strength.
Healthy gums are pink in colour and firm to the touch. They also sit tightly around your teeth. If you are experiencing gum disease your gums may be red in colour and appear inflamed. You may also notice bleeding after brushing or flossing.
There are two stages of gum disease. The first is gingivitis and causes redness, swelling and/or bleeding. The second and more severe stage of gum disease is known as periodontitis – this must be treated or you could face losing your natural teeth.
How does gum disease occur?
Predominantly caused by poor hygiene, gum disease occurs when there is a build-up of plaque around the gum line. Other risk factors include:
- Smoking
- Sugary diet
- Diseases such as diabetes
- Particular medications
