When the inside of a tooth becomes infected, root canal treatment is performed to clear the infection and restore your mouth back to health.
It is a very delicate procedure, which requires a high level of skill and experience which our dentists can provide.
What is a root canal infection?
A root canal infection occurs when the dental nerve or soft tissue inside a tooth becomes infected. It can cause inflammation and dental pain and your dentist will need to remove the bacteria and clean out the inside of the tooth.
You might experience an infection when the external layer of the tooth is damaged or cracked. This leaves the inside of a tooth vulnerable to bacteria.
If left untreated, a root canal infection can lead to discolouration, ongoing dental pain and ultimately the loss of your tooth.
The treatment explained
The top section of your tooth is removed so that the dentist can access the affected dental tissue. The infection is then removed using tiny files and a disinfectant solution is used to thoroughly clean out any remaining bacteria.
You may require a crown to be placed on top of the affected tooth at the end of treatment to ensure it is permanently sealed and protected.
